Let’s Be Friends!

week 18 (1)

Would you look at this!

One of the Dominiques (I’m going to just declare her Kira) started squatting down in the submissive pose for me yesterday, and again today! Mostly she runs away with the rest of the flock, but it was so sweet that she sat for me to pet her for a moment or two.

Of course, there are photos from all the girls on their respective pages. Check under the Chicken Chronicles tab to see more of the Fourth and Fourth-and-a-Half flocks.

And So It Begins!

DSCN3919

Had only started checking the small coops this week wondering when I’d see our first egg from the new girls…and today I got one! Pretty much on time, too as the Fourth Flock turned 17 weeks this past Tuesday.

I started to think “how am I going to know which of my fourteen chicks laid first?”, then realized it’s actually “which of my eight Fourth Flock girls laid first”! The six from the Fourth-and-a-Half flock won’t start laying for about another month – and their eggs should all be some shade of blue or green! I can’t wait!

As for the older girls, well, some have already started molting so it’s hard to tell who might be my active ones. I collected six eggs yesterday (five brown, one blue) out of twelve total hens – eleven if you discount Li’l Half-blind Girl. Today, four more brown eggs. The three left of the First Flock are over five years old now, so there won’t be very many blue or green eggs from them anymore. The ratio is about two blue to ten brown eggs in every carton I collect.

I apologize if anyone came looking for updated photos of the two young flocks this past week…time just gets away from me. I will try and add more pics soon.

UPDATE: 8/24/19 I did post a few more shots. You can check out all the girls under the Chicken Chronicles tab.

Thanks for stopping by!

Water Woes

Happy Birfdays to me!  Well, a few days late. I just turned THREE YEARS OLD on Tuesday (whatever day that means).

Mum and The Man gave me a plate of salamis…boy were those good! I’ve been getting some extra treats every day and Mum hasn’t called me “Fatty McFatterson” all week, either! She does comment on my messy hair and dirty buttz, but I don’t mind.

Not only did mum post new pictures of the chickie-babies, but a few for a new project The Man had to take on…something about a leaking water pipe. He got to dig in the ground. Boy, did he make a mess! And Mum scolds me if I’ve been digging. Humph!

Anyway, you’ll find the new photos of the chickie-babies under the Chicken Chronicles tab. The other project will get it’s own tab. Enjoy!

Why “Dog Days of Summer”?

DSCN3826

I asked Mum what “Dog Days of Summer” meant. I mean, aren’t all days dog days? And this week especially ‘cuz Tuesday is my birfday!

Well, Mum found out that “Dog Days of Summer” doesn’t have anything to do with the heat or being a lazy-butt hound. It’s about the Dog Star, Sirius. I don’t know what he did to think he’s a celebrity, ‘cuz I never heard of him before.  Mum says he is a constellation. I don’t know what breed that is. His man is called Orion – silly name, and him and Sirius apparently weren’t very nice, all about war and disaster. Sirius supposedly gets up before dawn in July and August. I bet he just wants to go lay out on the deck where it’s nice and cool. He’s probably a big hairy dog like me – can’t blame us for being grumpy when it’s hot out.  I guess old Orion didn’t have air conditioning. Kinda makes you feel bad for Sirius.

Anyway, Mum snapped a few pics of the littlest chickie-babies today. You can find the Fourth-and-a-Half Flock under the Chicken Chronicles tab. I’m just gonna stay inside where it’s nice and cool today.
